Where to Begin?

By Kathy.

If you have never worked with an interior decorator, you may wonder about the things you need to consider when you begin a design project. While every project is unique, here are some insider’s secrets to getting started.

Know your tastes, style and lifestyle preferences–we advise our clients to look through design magazines and our website gallery to identify rooms that they like. After a while, you will notice a trend in the rooms you are attracted to, and that will help you identify your personal style. Thinking about your lifestyle and how much time you can spend keeping up your home’s interior will help you make decisions to choose appropriate furnishings.

Budget—determine what you want to invest in your room so that you can complete the project and spend your decorating dollars wisely. Research prices for the types of products you need to purchase, whether it’s paint, furniture, lighting, rugs, or accessories.

Consider your space—choosing furnishings of the proper size and scale can make or break a successful design plan. We often start with a to-scale floor plan to be sure that the sofa you fall in love with in the showroom will fit in the room.

Functionality of the traffic flow—the most beautiful room is useless if you can’t easily walk around the furniture, open doors or cabinets, or see the television.

Focal point—every room needs something to draw your attention. If your room lacks an architectural detail or feature, we need to create one.

Harmony—does it all work together within the room and from one room to the next. Do your rooms feel like they are part of the same home, or do they look like you could not make up your mind about your personal style?

Paint color—clients often contact us because they can’t find furnishings to work with a paint color they have already committed to. Choose the paint color last. We can help you select a paint color to work with your furnishings, but we can’t weave a fabric to work with a paint color.

Project Style’s consultative approach to design projects guides our clients through these and other important considerations to help them achieve their visions for beautiful spaces and lifestyles.
